If you′re considering having lasik eye surgery, you should be aware that some people can′t have lasik. Some conditions just mean that you′ll have to put off surgery while others mean that you aren′t a good candidate at all.
You can′t have lasik eye surgery if you′re under the age of 18. Lasik has not been approved by the FDA for children under this age. In fact, if you′re under 20, you probably still have some instability issues with your vision. Your eyeglasses prescription strength hasn′t been clearly established.
You need your eyesight to be in a steady state when you are ready to have lasik eye surgery done. Several different occurrences can cause fluctuations. When these changes are temporary, it just means you′ll need to wait.
For instance, being pregnant or nursing a baby can cause your vision to be unpredictable. Any hormonal change can do the same. Certain diseases, though, can cause a more permanent environment of change. Diabetes is one of them.
Some medications will have a similar effect on the eyes. The vision will change when you are taking such medications. You might not always be able to see well with the same pair of glasses or contacts. While taking such medications, it′s not a good time to have lasik done.
Some medications will affect the healing process after lasik eye surgery. Steroids, for example, are one medication that will keep your eyes from healing properly. If you have to take them for a short time, your doctor will help you make sure they are out of your system before you have the surgery.
There are other conditions that will prevent your eyes from healing the way they should. If you have an autoimmune disease, lasik eye surgery isn′t a good option for you. Some examples of this type of disease are rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
People who have HIV aren′t good candidates for lasik for the same reason. Their eyes will not mend as they usually would. If you have diabetes, you know that the disease comes with its own problems related to healing.
Many eye conditions will lead the doctor to disqualify a candidate for surgery. These include Herpes simplex or Herpes zoster of the eye area, inflammation or previous injury to the eye, keratoconus, cataracts, or glaucoma.
Before you have lasik eye surgery, check with your employer if there′s any doubt as to whether it will be a problem at work. If you don′t have any problems with your eyes that prohibit it, you should be able to go forward with lasik eye surgery.
