-- Pros and Cons of Lasik --
If you′re thinking of having lasik eye surgery, you′re wise to explore the good and bad points of having the operation. Before the surgery is the time to question it, not after. So, make sure you know the pros and cons of lasik.
Pro: The surgery is permanent. You no longer have to buy glasses once a year or contacts several times a year. If all goes well, your vision will be adequately corrected for years to come.
Con: The surgery is permanent. If something goes wrong, it may not be easily fixed. With contacts or glasses, all you have to do if your vision isn′t corrected is to get a new exam and a new pair of contacts or glasses. With lasik, probably only surgery will help, if anything at all.
Con: The cost is high. You may be paying for the surgery for as much as five years or longer, depending on how you pay. On top of this, to get a really good surgeon, you will probably have to pay a higher cost. It will be worth it, but expensive.
Pro: With lasik surgery, you pay a high price once. However, after that, your costs go way down. Unlike with other methods of vision correction, you don′t have to buy new lenses frequently. If you tend to spend quite a bit of money on contacts or glasses, lasik may be cheaper in the long run.
Pro: With lasik you are free of wearing any lenses that are uncomfortable or limit your activities. You can be fairly certain that lasik surgery will allow you to go about your business without a thought to eye care.
Con: Your eyes will probably worsen as you get older, due to presbyopia. When you see middle aged or older people holding reading material at arm′s length to see it, this is the cause. Even with lasik, you will need reading glasses at some point when this happens.
Pro: The surgery is virtually painless. This is not true of some other eye surgeries. Some of them are very painful for awhile after the surgery. With lasik, you′ll feel no more than a little discomfort.
Pro: Downtime is minimal. You will feel well before, during, and after your surgery. You′ll have some blurry vision at first, but it shouldn′t last for long. You will likely see normally after a day, have complete recovery within days and complete visual stability will occur usually within weeks.
Consider the choice well before you decide to have or not have lasik surgery. However, know that any information you lack can be gained from the reputable surgeon you have selected for the surgery.
