Lasik Option Guide - Preparing For Eye Surgery

                    What you want to know...........

-- Preparing For Eye Surgery --

Having lasik eye surgery is a big step. First you do your research and select a doctor. When you are almost ready for the procedure, there are a few preparations you will need to make.

The doctor will do an initial exam to make sure you are a good match for lasik eye surgery. Before this exam is done, however, it is your job to make sure you stop wearing any contacts for several weeks before the exam. The doctor will tell you how long.

The doctor will take a medical history, including all the information you have about your eyes. You will also be required to disclose all the medications you are using. Make sure you tell the doctor about any over the counter drugs as well.

Then, it′s up to you to be certain that you really want this before you sign the consent form. No one can fault you if the procedure just isn′t for you. However, if you go into it after careful thought, you are more likely to be satisfied.

The doctor will make a map of your cornea. This will show what areas need to be corrected. It is usually done with wavefront technology. This information is used to program the laser.

When the day before the surgery arrives, you will start your physical preparations. You will begin by discontinuing the use of products that might cause eye irritation or infection. These include lotions, creams, make-up, and perfumes.

Your eyelashes can cause problems during the surgery, too. For this reason, you will be asked to scrub them thoroughly for a few days before the surgery. This will remove any debris or loose eyelashes so your lashes are clear and clean on the day of surgery.

You will need to arrange for someone to take you in for the eye surgery and pick you up. Because of the medication, you will be too relaxed to drive there. Your surgery will make your vision too blurry to drive home.

Make arrangements so that you will have a few days to recover from the surgery. It′s best if you can take off from work. You would be wise to stay away from any contact sports you usually engage in, also.

On the day of the lasik eye surgery, you will have oral medications you are to take before going in. Your doctor will give you the prescription, or the medication itself, ahead of time. You will also be told exactly when to take it.

When all this is done, you will be well on your way to seeing better. The preparations are neither difficult nor painful. Lasik eye surgery should start out easy and stay that way.
