-- Maintaining Eye Health --
Eye health is always important. If you are getting ready to have lasik eye surgery, you will want to be especially careful of the well-being of your eyes. Even if you′ve already had lasik surgery, you still need to take care of your eyes.
Believe it or not, diet and lifestyle can have a big impact on the health of your eyes. Eating healthy will help to prevent many eye problems or diseases. For example, cataracts are more likely to form in the eyes of people who eat unhealthily.
Cataract formation can also be affected by smoking or heavy alcohol use. You can also be at risk for cataracts if you expose your eyes to the sun too much. For this reason, you should always protect your eyes in bright sunlight.
If you have diabetes, you need to control it for a variety of reasons. The health of your eyes is just one. Uncontrolled diabetes is commonly known to cause diabetic retinopathy. It is also a contributing factor for cataracts and glaucoma.
Wearing eye makeup is fine if you are cautious. However, if you don′t get new eye makeup every six months or less, bacteria could cause you numerous problems. You could get styes or eye infections. If you′ve just had lasik, there is a period when you can′t wear any eye makeup.
You may wear contact lenses up until a certain period before your eye surgery. If over time, you lose near vision around the age of 40, you might end up wearing contacts after lasik. In either case, special care must be taken to prevent infections from contact use.
Use the cleaning procedure explained to you at your doctor′s office to take care of your contacts. If you somehow contaminate your bottle of contact solution, buy a new one. There′s no reason to take chances. If you use extended wear contacts, be alert to infections.
Blepharitis is one eye problem that can cause infections at any time. If you have this condition, you will experience irritation and scaly skin around the edges of your eyelids. If you have this condition before your lasik surgery, you can remedy it by mixing a drop of baby shampoo with water and wiping your eyelashes from the center outward.
If you have just had lasik, you will not be able to do this. You will need to discuss with your doctor what to do about it. If it happens long after your surgery, treat it as you normally would.
Your eyes are precious. If you take care of them, they could serve you well for a lifetime. So, pay attention to the health of your eyes. You won′t be sorry.
